More Tory policy that will affect schools is slowly emerging. The BBC have revealed that in a draft of the Tory planning policy, planning permission for schools will be controlled centrally. A central feature of Tory School’s policy is that parents or other groups can open their own independent schools wherever they want – and this policy is designed to remove the red tape associated with this.

However – surely only local councils and organisations truly understand the locality? The issues of traffic and transport – which schools have a massive impact on – are best assessed locally. Or is this a hint that the Torys anticipate local councils being unhappy about the new schools? Where is the evidence that the current, locally controlled planning powers are stifling the creation of new schools? If it’s not broke – why fix it?
